The Inspiring Journeys of Peggy Achieng: Bridging Dreams to Reality

Peggy Achieng Sonye: Rising Above Challenges

In the heart of Kisumu, on October 10, 2001, an ambitious child was born. Peggy Achieng Sonye, the second of four children, was determined to shine despite the odds. Her father worked tirelessly in a cyber café, while her mother toiled as a farmer. Life wasn’t easy, but Peggy’s spirit was unyielding.

From a young age, Peggy exhibited a hunger for knowledge. She began her educational journey at Bridge International Academy, Kingston, where she sat for her KCPE exams in 2015, scoring 328 marks.

Bridge was more than a school; it was my source of strength and hope. The unique uniforms, the academic excellence, and the nurturing environment made us feel special and capable. She fondly recalls.

Peggy’s high school years at Diemo Mixed Secondary School were marked by challenges. As a day scholar, she often struggled with late arrivals due to family responsibilities. Yet, she never lost sight of her goals. She embraced leadership roles, becoming the school captain and participating in numerous school contests.

Those experiences taught me resilience and the power of self-belief, she says. She completed her KCSE exams in 2019.

In 2020, Peggy joined the University of Embu to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. University life was a whirlwind of new experiences and financial struggles.

Coming from a rural background, adjusting to the diverse university environment was tough, but it broadened my horizons, she shares.

Despite the challenges, Peggy completed her degree in April 2024. Today, Peggy is engaging in casual work while awaiting her graduation. She has a mix of excitement and uncertainty about the future.

I’m thrilled to have completed my degree, completing my university education amidst so many challenges feels like finally seeing the sun after the floods. It’s a reminder that no matter how tough the journey, perseverance and hope can lead you to brighter days I am eager to see what life has in store, she says, her eyes gleaming with hope.

In the next five to ten years, she envisions herself as a successful entrepreneur, financially empowered, and surrounded by a loving family.

Peggy’s advice to current Bridge pupils is simple:

The sky is not the limit. With determination and discipline, you can reach unimaginable heights. It’s not just about academics; embrace extracurricular activities too.
