Humphrey Burugu Wairegi: From Humble Beginnings to Aspiring Accountant

In the serene village of Nyandarua North, on September 18, 2002, Humphrey Burugu Wairegi was born into a world of challenges. The eldest of three children, he watched his mother toil on their farm and his father run a recycling business. Despite their hard work, life in the Kiambiu slums was tough.

Humphrey’s education journey began at Bridge International Academies, Kiambiu, where he scored 311 marks in his KCPE exams in 2015. 

Bridge taught us more than academics; it taught us discipline and resilience. Attending a symposium in Nakuru was a life-changing experience, instilling in me the confidence to dream big. Humphrey recalls. 

High school at Igikiro Boys was a battleground of peer pressure and substance abuse. But Humphrey’s inner strength, nurtured by Bridge, helped him rise above these challenges. He successfully completed his KCSE exams in 2019.

In 2020, Humphrey joined the Catholic University of Eastern Africa to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce, specializing in Accounting. Commuting daily from Eastleigh to Langata due to financial constraints was not easy. 

Those long, exhausting walks tested my limits, but they also strengthened my zeal to make it in life,  he reflects.

As he awaits his graduation, Humphrey is filled with gratitude and a sense of achievement. 

I’ve gained so much, both academically and personally,  he says. In the next five to ten years, he dreams of becoming a certified public accountant and making a significant impact at the national level. 

His ultimate goal is to uplift his family from the Kiambiu slums to a more sustainable environment. Humphrey’s message to other pupils is inspiring:

Nothing comes easy. Work hard and smart. Carry a positive mentality and believe in your dreams.
