Rising Against All Odds: Overcoming Adversity with Determination and Grace

Lucy Kyalo Mueni, a 20-year-old from Nairobi, is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Information and Communication Technology at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University.

Born on November 16, 2003, Lucy is the second born of three children. Her father, a construction worker, and her mother, a casual worker, struggle to make ends meet. The financial instability at home was a constant challenge, but Lucy’s determination was never shaken.

Lucy began her educational journey at Bridge International Academies, Tassia, where she excelled, scoring an impressive 405 marks in her KCPE exams.

Bridge was very supportive. The teachers were skilled, and the teaching methods were engaging,  she says.

Bridge’s scholarship program from class 6 to 8 was a lifeline for Lucy, providing her with the opportunity to focus on her studies without the burden of financial worries.

High school presented its own set of challenges. After joining Muthale Girls in Kitui in 2018, she later transferred to St. Augustine High School in 2019, where she completed her secondary education. Despite academic pressures and peer influence, Lucy’s hard work paid off, earning her a B+ in her KCSE exams in April 2022.

At the university, Lucy faces ongoing financial challenges, especially with accommodation. However, her passion for Information and Communication Technology drives her forward. She dreams of working for an international company and pursuing a master’s degree in the future. “Life is hard, but I am focused on my goals,” she asserts.

Lucy’s journey has not been without personal struggles. Her mother’s illness and subsequent hospitalization led to a period of depression that affected her education.

It was a tough time, but the support from a well-wisher helped me stay stable and mentally fit, she recalls.

This support extended to her siblings, enabling them to continue their education as well.

Living in an underserved community plagued by crime and violence added to Lucy’s challenges. The lack of public schools made education a luxury. However, the introduction of Bridge International Academies in Tassia provided her with the affordable and quality education she needed to succeed.

To current Bridge pupils, Lucy offers this advice:

Work hard, stay focused, and have goals. Believe in yourself and your ability to overcome any challenge.

The stories of Charles and Lucy serve as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that with support, determination, and a quality education, anything is possible. Bridge International Academies continues to transform lives, ensuring that every child has access to a brighter future.
